LA PRIDE: Three days, that famous parade, and Molly Ringwald as Grand Marshal? Yep, it is one of the country's largest celebrations of LGBT pride and definitely one of West Hollywood's most festive and community-centered parties of the year. The fun is on from Friday, June 8 through Sunday, June 10, the festival rolls on Saturday and Sunday, and the parade dances Sunday at 11 a.m. along Santa Monica Boulevard.
BELMONT BASH: Can you believe the Triple Crown is nearly over? Can you believe that I'll Have Another might just nab the big honors, the first horse to do so in 34 years? It's excitement time in horsey circles, meaning Santa Anita Park is doing it up with a brunch and race-watching action. We're already jumping up and down, waving our fancy hat. Saturday, June 9 (Update: News arrived on June 8 that I'll Have Another will not run; details.)
JPL OPEN HOUSE: With the Transit of Venus this week, a lot of us have turned our thoughts to those people who regularly think about the cosmos. You can meet several of those brainy scientists, and see the rovers they build, at a two-day walk-around at one of the world's smartest institutions. It's in Pasadena, as you probably know. JPL! LA RIVER RIDE: The fact is that our famous, and infamous, waterway has been getting more and more recreational consideration, from shore-close artwalks to kayaking to this mondo biking event. There are multiple rides for multiple levels, and all start and end at Griffith Park. Say "hey" the river for us, and say we're all keeping it in mind. Sunday, June 10
PREHISTORIC WONDER: Your kids can look at drawings of saber-toothed cats in books, which are cool, or they can see a moving, realistic saber-toothed cat puppet right in front of them at the Page Museum at the tar pits. It is so real it might be a little scary for wee tots, but cooler for the older set. Oh, and the puppet's makers? The Jim Henson Creature Shop. Sunday, June 10
