Weekend: Pie-Makers Rule

Crust, filling, pizzazz? Sample top entries at LACMA.

PIE TIMES: People who know their way around a crust are tying on the aprons and making for LACMA, where they'll present their top pies. Meat or sweet, it matters not; there are multiple categories. Even if you're not baking, you can sample. KCRW is the host, there will be Tim Burton-inspired pies, and a sweet tour of the museum. Quite a way to wind the final weekend of summer down. Sunday, Sept. 18

63RD PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS: They're at the Nokia, but if you're not among those getting dressy and walking the red carpet, there are downloadable ballots at the official Emmy site. Plus other goodies, too. Yep, there's a page on the Emmy site devoted to which nominees have the most Twitter followers. That's fine and dandy, of course, but we like our Emmy voting to remain traditional. Sunday, Sept. 18

THE GENIUS OF JAMES BROWN: Not only is there a new, extremely comprehensive Grammy Museum exhibit about the singer opening on Saturday, Sept. 17, but the mayor has proclaimed that Sept. 17 is James Brown Day in LA. And you want to see one of his famous capes? You will, at the museum.

COASTAL CLEAN-UP DAY: The amount of trash picked up last year does drop the jaw. Ready? Over 1.2 million tons. If that number inspires you -- and really, we should all be moved to action by it -- you can sign up for pick-up duty on Saturday, Sept. 17. Bet there's a beach or inland waterway near you.

PORT OF LOS ANGELES LOBSTER FEST: It's billed as the largest lobster festival in the world. What else do you need to know? Oh, right. Location. Well, San Pedro, as you might expect. Oh, and the lobsters are from Maine. And the funny hats? On your head, if you buy one. Friday, Sept. 16 through Sunday, Sept. 18
