Weekend: Stay Home, Go Places

Globetrot around LA over the long weekend

You're here all weekend. But you can go places, too. For instance...

The world: Los Angeles County Museum of Art lists Japanese Paintings and Dutch and Flemish works as being on view, along several other permanent exhibits from all points on the planet. The museum is open on Memorial Day. In fact, May 31 is a Target Free Holiday Monday.

Kingston: Some 30,000 people head for the UCLA Intermural Field each May for the famous JazzReggae Festival. What's there: Good music, top acts, and songs infused with Jamaican rhythms and world beats. Raphael Saadiq headlines May 30, Nas and Damian Marley are on for May 31.

Athens: The Valley Greek Fest draws about 50,000 revelers to St. Nicholas Church in Northridge every Memorial Day Weekend. What they'll enjoy: dancers, cooking demos, yummy eats, which include Thiples. We've never had Thiples -- a deep-fried sweet -- but we shall change that. May 29-31

Louisiana: Eddie Baytos & The Nervis Brothers are bringing the traditional zydeco to the free Summer Music Series at the Original Farmers Market on Friday night, May 28.

Edinburgh: It's the piping and the drumming, both, that grab the heart. But ScotsFest, a two-day Costa Mesa merriment, also boasts caber tossing and the delicious tasting of malt-based beverages. May 29-30

Bali Ha'i: "South Pacific" opened at the Ahmanson on Thursday, May 27. There are several long-weekend events planned around the long-running musical, including a "South Pacific" happy hour at the Wilshire Grand, and a USO-inspired show.
