Weekend: Super Bowl, Lunar New Year

View at home, or with great cheering crowds.

SUPER BOWL VIEWING: If you're not hosting, or crashing on someone's couch, get your fill of beering and cheering at Yankee Doodles in Santa Monica, Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas, either Busby's (Santa Monica or mid-Wilshire), or Big Wangs in Hollywood or North Hollywood. If you just watch for the commercials, the Paley Center's running the classics every day at 3PM through the 7th.

LUNAR NEW YEAR PARADE: Chinatown's Golden Dragon Parade is on February 20th, but the San Gabriel Valley is welcoming the Year of the Tiger on Saturday, February 6th with a traditional procession and festivities. Valley Boulevard in Alhambra is the spot; 10-5:30PM are the hours.

ANNE RICE AT VROMAN'S: A major author, a favorite bookstore, the last signing of a big book tour. All those things put together says to us that fans better get to Pasadena on Saturday, February 6th. The book is "Angel Time: The Songs of Seraphim." The time of the signing is 1PM, and this is a get-there-early deal. Early-early.

THEATER OPENINGS AND CLOSINGS: "Mary Poppins" is stowing her talking umbrella at the Ahmanson after Sunday, February 7th; the horses of "Carousel" will creak to a stop on the same date (see it at the Freud Playhouse). "The Female of the Species" with Annette Bening just debuted at the Geffen Playhouse.

NINE HOBBIT-Y HOURS: The Aero is showing all three "The Lord of the Rings" movies -- in order, we're guessing. It has been too long since we saw the Battle of Helms Deep played large. Everything starts at noon on Saturday, February 6th. Plan on emerging from the theater around midnight.
