Worth Barking About: The Puppy Love 5K

Leg it to Lake Poway and run/walk to support animals in need of homes.

THERE'S NEVER A TIME... when your pup isn't up for a walk, pretty much. Oh, he might occasionally be under the weather -- poor snookums -- or a little tired, but the sight of the leash and a pick-up bag can send most woofers into a door-pawing frenzy. (Aside, serious dog people: Does the mere sound of the pick-up bag being crinkled in your hand rouse your hound? It's almost as powerful as the hum of the can opener, for many canines.) What happens after your entryway is pawed at with pure excitement is up to you, for you're the driver of the walk. You have the ultimate say in how long it will be and where you'll head together. But what if you were to tell your pooch -- he's always listening, you know -- that you'd be heading out to a nature-lovely spot, for a truly long strut, a walk that will help other woofers? One imagines that the door-pawing frenzy would only grow in happy intensity. So prepare, pup parents, to tell your dog this: You're joining the Helen Woodward Animal Center's Puppy Love 5K, a run/walk to support those tail-waggers without homes. Ready to hit the lake-close trail? Then clear...

SUNDAY, MARCH 13... for your Fido-helping fundraising. The date should give a clue as to the theme (yep, it's St. Patrick's), so if you need a green kerchief for your pup to don, or a emerald-cute baseball cap for yourself, best get on that plan soon. The pre-events at the Blue Buffalo-sponsored event start early, at 7 in the morning, with the run kicking off at 8:30 and the walk some twenty minutes later. Cost to join the 7th annual Puppy Love 5K? It's thirty eight bucks for adult runners. Keep in mind, also, that team discounts are available for those going the walking route. As for the "After Paw-ty" in the Wagging Wellness Village? Dog agility demos, a costume contest, kidly face painting, and more sunny almost-spring doings await, all with a Luck o' the Irish theme. Consider the luck of the canines you'll be lending a paw to, via your entry fee, and your show of support. Wouldn't your own spoiled, loved-on Lassie want that for her fellow furry sisters and brothers? We all do, so make some luck on March 13 for animals needing their next, and for-always, home.
