Worth the Drive: Pool Views at Classic Desert Motel

Worth the Drive is NBCLA's twice weekly look at nearby getaways

Your job: Decide to get out of town and fast. Our job: Help you find where you're headed. This week, NBCLA's Worth the Drive takes us to...

The pool at the Palm Springs Travelodge: It's a classic splash at a classic motel. In fact, we'll go out on a balcony and say that Travelodge as a whole has very much contributed to our collective idea of the mid-century motel. The Palm Springs outpost is an excellent example.

Stylish roots: The mountain-close motel has made strides to get back in touch with that trendy affordability. The word "hip" is bandied about on both the site and sign. There's a portrait of Marilyn Monroe in the lobby, and retro-regency wallpaper behind the front desk.

Coachella: No rooms left. Which likely goes for much of the desert resort cities. We're talking April 16-18. But don't let us dissuade you. A phone, a friendly manner, and an open half hour of dialing may net you something yet.

Travelodge special: Nope, we're not looking at music festival rooms, we're looking to lovely roasty summer days. The Palm Springs Travelodge has a fine special ahead. From June 1 through August 31, 2010, get 10 percent off a room that looks onto the pool.

Prices: The rates page says a poolside king is $69 to $149. This is Palm Springs. And that is before the summer pool view special.

Barbecues: Available for guests to use. That is classic motel. That is something more luxe resorts might look into, to change it up. You, your Bermuda Shorts, and some tongs. It's almost like drinking vacation straight from a glass.
