Worth the Drive: The Avalon Ball

Worth the Drive is NBCLA's twice weekly look at nearby getaways

Your job: Decide to get out of town and fast. Our job: Help you find where you're headed. This week, NBCLA's Worth the Drive takes us to...

The Avalon Ball: Two words we like. Avalon=Catalina Island's largest burg, a beachy, button-big city that keeps close to its '40s big-band past. Ball=A grand dance. Okay, "the," you're not too bad, either. Frequently helpful, in fact.

Date: Saturday, May 15

The place: Casino Ballroom. Dear science: Please look into whether there is some sort of cosmic doorway in the space-time continuum out near Catalina, and please see if the Casino Ballroom hasn't slipped through. We're in 2010, while the famous round landmark shimmers in and out of 1932. You all see it too, right?

The ball: Dressy-dressy. Ladies with corsages, gents who've waxed their 'staches into little points at each end. Brassy music, dance-floor romance, eye-making out on the balcony. You'll want to eat before the ball, but there will be a cash bar.

Tickets: Going fast, says the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles. They're $48 for non-members. Also, there's a special ferry back to the mainland for dancers. Best read all the details before hitting the docks.

"Worth the Drive": A figure of speech. Don't drive to Catalina Island. If you figure out a way, however, let us know.

Avalon: You don't mind the "button-big" thing we said, right? We love that. We love the golf carts. We love that you can walk everywhere. The beauty and the history and the Victorian hotels and funky motels. And the buffalo! The buffalo. We're just jealous is all.
