Part of a busy freeway interchange near downtown Los Angeles was closed Thursday morning due to an investigation involving a person who was struck and killed on a transition road.
Paramedics were dispatched to the freeway shortly after 5 a.m. following a report of a pedestrian who was struck on the freeway. The victim died at the scene.
A preliminary investigation indicated that a person was struck on the eastbound 60 Freeway transition, which crosses over the northbound 5 Freeway transition road to the 101 Freeway. The force of the impact likely threw the individual down onto the transition road.
An off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer was driving the vehicle that struck the pedestrian, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The northbound 5 Freeway transition road to the northbound 101 Freeway was closed for the investigation. Traffic was also backing up on the 60 Freeway.
All lanes reopened at about 9 a.m.
