A car crashed into a building in Hyde Park Sunday, leaving two people dead and causing a portion of the building to collapse, police said.
The crash occurred at approximately 9 a.m. on the 3300 block of West 66th Place, and a concrete overhang fell on top of the car after the crash, leaving a man and a woman dead at the scene.
LaChristopher Giles Jr. was the man killed in the crash, according to his family. A small memorial had been set up at the crash site to honor both victims. Family members said the woman in the car was Giles' girlfriend.
Giles lost control of the car, hit a fire hydrant, smashed into a pole and then crashed into an abandoned building before the car was crushed by a concrete portion of the building, according to police.
The fire department helped hoist the car out of the crumbling building.
Police are still investigating the cause of this accident, but they are looking at speed as a factor. Police said Crenshaw Boulevard is particularly known for speeding drivers.
