Two men and a teenage boy were killed and another man and two women were wounded in two apparently unrelated shootings within a mile and 15 minutes of one another in the unincorporated Athens area near South Los Angeles.
One person was detained Thursday morning in connection with one of the shootings. The sheriff's department said the two shootings don't appear to be connected.
Deputies assigned to the sheriff's South Los Angeles station responded about 8 p.m. Wednesday to a shooting call at a home in the 11700 block of Berendo Avenue, near Vermont Avenue and the 105 Freeway, where they located three victims suffering from gunshot wounds at the front yard of the location, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
One man died at the scene. A teenage boy and another man were taken to a hospital, where the teenager died, the sheriff's department said. The third victim was hospitalized in unknown condition.
It was unclear if the shooting involved gang activity.
A second shooting was reported about 8:15 p.m. in the 1200 block of West 105th Street, one block west of Vermont Avenue, the LASD said.
Responding deputies located three victims at three different locations in close proximity to each other. One man sustained at least one gunshot wound to the upper body and died at the scene. Two women were taken to a hospital, one suffering from a gunshot wound, the other had severe head trauma, the sheriff's department said. Their conditions were unknown.

The shooting appeared to be a result of a domestic incident and a family member was detained, the LASD said.
