5 Hospitalized, Including 3 Officers, After Fire in Santa Monica

Officers were told people were inside the burning building and rushed in to save them, officials said

Five people were hospitalized, including three police officers who were being treated for smoke inhalation, after a structure fire along a busy Santa Monica shopping strip on Sunday.

The fire broke out before 3:30 p.m. at 1030 Montana Ave., according to the Santa Monica Fire Department.

Officers who were at the scene were told people were inside the burning building and rushed in to save them, officials said. They returned from the building with one victim.

Firefighters rescued a second person that was trapped inside.

The officers were taken to St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica for observation and were expected to be released soon.

One person who was rescued was in serious condition and being treated for burns and smoke inhalation. Injuries to the second victim were unclear.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
