Mother Arrested After Allegedly Stabbing Daughter With Scissors

A 39-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of murder Tuesday after she allegedly stabbed her 5-month-old daughter in the chest with scissors after getting into an argument with the baby's father, police said.

The incident was reported at 3:30 p.m. in the 2100 block of Park Grove Avenue in the University Park area, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The child's father arrived home and got into an argument with the woman, who stabbed the child, Ramirez said. The man disarmed her and called 911, he said, and she was taken into custody.

An unidentified witness said he saw the father with a bloody shirt.

The baby was taken to the hospital, where she remained in serious but stable condition, police said.

The woman was identified as Mary Mendez, according to police. Mendez was booked on two counts of attempted murder on her child and her husband. She is expected to appear in court Thursday and her bail was set at $2 million.

Veronica Roman, a friend of Mendez, believed the mother suffered with depression after the premature birth of her child.
