“Ghost Riding the Whip” Hospitalizes Teen

A dumb idea.

A 17-year-old Brentwood, Calif. girl is in the hospital after getting run over by her own car while she was trying a stunt known as "ghost riding the whip."

Police say the girl was standing on a footstep on the driver's side of her 1980s-model Chevrolet Blazer Monday evening in Brentwood as the SUV crept forward. The teen slipped and fell and her upper legs were run over by the car.

She was taken by helicopter to a local trauma center.

Sgt. Mark Misquez of the Brentwood Police Department said the injuries are serious but not life threatening.

"Ghost riding the whip" is a stunt in which a driver gets out of his car and dances around and on top of the slowly moving vehicle to a thumping hip-hop beat.

The phenomenon was popularized about three years ago with this early YouTube clip, set to a song which mentions the craze,  "Tell Me When to Go" by Bay Area rapper E-40.
