Armed Man in Custody After Hourslong Standoff in Northridge

A 37-year-old man was in custody Monday morning after he allegedly threatened his mother with a gun and then barricaded himself for hours at a Northridge home where two people were inside, officials said.

Officers were called to the 17000 block of Keswick Street about 1 a.m. after reports that man threatened his mother with a gun, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The incident began when the man, who has a history of mental illness, asked his mother to drive him to the hospital because he wasn't feeling well, police said. When they arrived at the crowded hospital, the man then became agitated and allegedly threatened his mother with a gun.

The gunman then kicked his mother out of the car and returned to the home where his father and a caregiver were inside.

A SWAT team surrounded the home and streets in the area during the standoff.

Police said the man turned himself in to authorities at the command post some time before 6 a.m.

A gun was recovered outside home and 50 other guns were found inside a safe at the home, police said.

No evacuations were ordered.
