Arrest Made in Slaying of Transgender Woman

The body of a transgender woman who was an activist in the LGBT community was found dead in June

A 38-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the slaying of a transgender woman in a case police are not investigating as a hate crime, police said.

Randy Lee Parkerson was arrested Tuesday in his vehicle in the 200 block of East Katella Avenue, said Anaheim police Lt. Bob Dunn, in a press release.

He was being held in connection with the June 12 slaying of Zoraida Reyes, 29, of Santa Ana, whose body was found in a Dairy Queen parking lot in the 200 block of North State College Boulevard.

Parkerson, of Anaheim, was booked into jail on a murder charge. He was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Reyes was an active member of several Orange County transgender and immigrant rights advocacy groups. Her slaying provoked an outcry in the transgender community over the lack of attention to such crimes.

Police did not reveal how she died, but said they had no evidence that Reyes was targeted. Detectives are not investigating the case as a hate crime, Dunn said.
