Father Charged After 4-Year-Old Girl Dies in South Los Angeles

"Police were requested by hospital staff.''

The father of a 4-year-old girl was charged Tuesday with the girl's death, which occurred over the weekend, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office.

Charles Richard Lee, 23, was arrested Sunday by Los Angeles Police Department Juvenile Division Detectives.

Lee has been charged with one count of assault on a child caushing death and faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in state prison, according to the LA County DA's office.

Prosecutors said the victim was dropped off at her father's home in the 1500 block of East 42nd Street several weeks ago, and allege Lee physically abused her.

Officers and detectives responded to County-USC Medical Center, where an ambulance took the girl about 11:15 a.m. Sunday.

"The victim had been transported from a residence in the 1500 block of East 42nd Street,'' according to an LAPD statement issued Monday. "Police were requested by hospital staff.''

After detectives conducted their initial investigation, they arrested Lee on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death, police said.

"At this time, the investigation is ongoing and is pending review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office,'' according to the LAPD.

The coroner's office reported that an autopsy was pending.
