Police were searching for a burglar who broke into a Newport Beach pharmacy in the middle of the night and made off with prescription cough syrup.
The break-in occurred around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 4200 block of Birch Street, according to the Newport Beach Police Department.
Officers responding to the store's alarm arrived with guns drawn and a police dog, and found a smashed glass door.
The pharmacy owner said it was the second time his store was burglarized this month, and fourth time over all, and this time the thief swiped about $100 in drugs.
Investigators said there have been more than 20 pharmacy burglaries in Orange County within the last several weeks. Detectives were going through the evidence to determine if Tuesday's burglary in Newport Beach was connected to the other burglaries.
No one else was inside the store at the time of the burglary.
