Cash in Your Unclaimed Property

Who wouldn’t want some extra money in their pocket, especially if it’s money they didn’t know they had?

The California State Controller’s Office safeguards millions of dollars that belong to residents who for one reason or another don't know they have that money. In a majority of cases, much of the money comes from forgotten bank accounts, bank accounts that were closed and still held money, checks that were never cashed or insurance policies.

There is no deadline for claiming the money once it is transferred over to the controller’s office.

Those wishing to check if they are owed some cash can search the state controller’s website by inputting some basic data, including first and last names.

Any money that is owed can be reclaimed on the site following the posted instructions and in a few weeks a check will be mailed out.
