Tick Fire: What to Know About Evacuations, Road and School Closures, Shelters

The Tick Fire started Thursday during a hot, dry and windy afternoon in the Santa Clarita area

Tens of thousands of residents north of Los Angeles were under evacuation orders as the Tick Fire burned in the Santa Clarita area, forcing road and school closures.

Here's what to know.

  • Size: 4,300 acres
  • Containment: 5 percent
  • Structures Destroyed: Six damaged, two lost
  • Structures Threatened: More than 15,000
  • Evacuation Orders: More than 40,000 people

Evacuations 

  • South of the 14 Freeway
  • East of Rolling Hills Avenue
  • North of Placerita Canyon Road
  • West of Agua Dulce Canyon Road

Evacuations have been lifted for some Santa Clarita neighborhoods, but officials warned that power may still be out.

Everything south of Fire Station 132 on Sand Canyon and the Sand Canyon offramp reopened. 

Residents north of Soledad between Whites and Sierra Highway were allowed to repopulate. 

As of 6 p.m. Friday night, re-population will begin along Sierra Highway at Linda Vista.

Major Road Closures

  • The California Highway Patrol reopened northbound lanes of the 14 Freeway.
  • Sand Canyon and Soledad off ramps are still closed.
  • The 14 Freeway southbound remains closed.

Evacuation Centers

  • College of the Canyons in Valencia at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road.
  • Large and small animals were being handled at the Castaic Animal Care Center at 31044 N. Charlie Canyon Road
  • West Ranch High School, 26255 Valencia Blvd
Some shelters had reached capacity.

School Closures

The Los Angeles Unified School District announced campuses in the San Fernando Valley would be closed Friday due to air quality and safety concerns.
