OPD Seek “Person of Interest” in Safeway Carjacking

Oakland police on Wednesday named a "person of interest" after an elderly man and a teenage girl were reportedly carjacked from an Oakland Safeway, while also urging people to come forward to help find that man.

UPDATE: Oakland Amber Alert "Unfounded"

Spokeswoman Johnna Watson identified the man as Roy McCamey, 54, a Safeway regular, who was acting "aggressively" inside the grocery store on Redwood Road just before 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

He is supposedly the African-American man with salt-and-pepper hair spotted stealing lobster tails and ribeye steak, moments before carjacking a red sedan. Inside that sedan was an older man and girl, who haven't been seen since.

The suspect was caught on security video inside the Safeway, which police released and are hoping community members will recognize.

What's "concerning" about this case is that no one in Oakland filed a missing person's report for the older man and girl, who witnesses said looked to be about 13 years old, Watson said. She acknowledged she is fully aware of the "rumors" out there indicating that perhaps the trio all knew each other.

"There's always the possibility the suspect has a relationship with people in the car," Watson said. "But we have to stay on point and treat this as a carjacking and kidnapping that took place."

She added: "There are unanswered questions and we need those answers."

The FBI is also involved and Crime Stoppers has offered a $10,000 reward in the case.
