California's roller coaster spring brought showers to the Bay Area on Wednesday night and will bring more snow to the Sierra Nevada, with potentially damaging winds in the mountains, according to weather forecasters.
The National Weather Service says a cold, wet system moving through Northern California will rapidly lower snow levels Wednesday night to around 2,500 feet in Shasta County mountains and 3,000 feet in the Sierra.
Rain showers from that system socked different parts of the Bay Area late Wednesday before moving east toward the Sierras. Forecasters say travelers heading over mountain passes should be prepared for winter driving conditions.
The Bay Area rain arrived in the North Bay in time for the peak of the evening commute before pushing south. The wet weather tapered off by the end of the day.
Lingering showers are expected to hang around for parts of the North Bay through early Thursday afternoon.
Elsewhere, high wind warnings will go into effect from Sequoia southward through the mountains and deserts of Southern California, where winds could peak at 70 mph. Red flag warnings for fire danger are posted for the southeast corner of the state.
