Mice Droppings Report at Mira Mesa High ‘Not Verified'

An inspection Wednesday following a complaint of mice droppings in a student's lunch at Mira Mesa High School was unsubstantiated, according to the county.

There was no "vermin or evidence of vermin observed at the time of the inspection" and the complaint was "not verified," according to the inspection report obtained by NBC 7. The inspection found no violations and the school received a 98 percent rating from the San Diego County Department of Public Health.

The inspection came in response to a reported of mouse droppings on Jan. 11. The school asked city officials to inspect its cafeteria after one student's lunch may have been contaminated by mouse droppings.

Mira Mesa High Principal Jeff Sabins sent a letter to parents Tuesday describing what happened.

School administrators were told of the "potential contamination of one student's lunch by mouse droppings," Sabins said.

Soon after, the school brought in the San Diego Unified School District pest specialist and ordered cleaning of the kitchen and serving areas.

Sabins said the school contacted the San Diego Department of Environmental Health to schedule an inspection.

"The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority, and that includes the food safety of the meals served from our school cafeteria," Sabins said in the note to parents.

The San Diego County Department of Public Health said the food safety requirements and procedures are in order at the high school. The school maintains an A rating.
