Coyote Killed By Fremont Police After Biting Man and 5-Year-Old Boy

Police in Fremont killed a coyote after it bit a 42-year-old man and 5-year-old boy in separate attacks on Christmas Day.

Officers on Thursday received several reports of a wild coyote biting people in the residential area of Olive and Palm avenues.

The first call came in at 5:41 p.m., when a man was being transported to a hospital after he had been bitten by a coyote, police said. The man told police he was walking to his vehicle parked in front of a home on the 3100 block of Starr Street when a coyote bit him on the leg.

Police said the man then ran with his children to the house and the coyote followed them.

He was able to get everyone inside and shut the door before the coyote could get in, police said. The coyote left the area after several minutes.

Officers responding to the area were unable to locate the coyote.

Police later received another report of a coyote attack at 6:28 p.m. The caller told police that he was running near his home on Montevideo Circle, when what he described as a wolf began to chase him.

The man was able to kick off the animal and safely return to his home police said.

While officers were searching for the coyote in the area, they received a call from a  local hospital reporting that a boy had been bit by a coyote.

The 5-year-old boy was walking on Via Oporto at about 5:30 p.m. when the coyote rushed him and bit him on the leg. Police said the boy's father ran to his aid and tried to scare the animal off. The coyote eventually left the area.

Police were able to locate the coyote on Nido Court. Officers said the coyote looked sick and possibly injured.

Police decided to put the coyote down since the animal may run away and continue attacking people. The animal was given to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and testing is being done to determine if the coyote had rabies.

The victims were treated and released from the hospital.
