Canyon Country Man Charged With Fatally Shooting His Dog

A Canyon Country man pleaded not guilty Friday to charges stemming from his dog's shooting death last month.

Christopher Ray Nard, 57, is charged with one felony count each of cruelty to an animal with a gun use allegation and discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, according to Deputy District Attorney Bradley Lieberman.

Nard allegedly shot his 9-year-old German shepherd, Shiloh, with a rifle on July 9 during a domestic dispute.

Nard remains free on $35,000 bail, but was ordered to undergo mental health counseling and not to be near any animals as conditions of his bail, according to a district attorney's spokesman.

Nard -- who is due back in a San Fernando courtroom Sept. 23 -- could face up to 13 years in state prison if convicted as charged, according to the District Attorney's Office.
