Teens Cheat Death After Car Goes Over Chatsworth Embankment

Three teenagers escaped death when their vehicle plunged 70 feet off the side of the road above Chatsworth, CHP officers said Sunday.

The driver, Justina M. Hernandez, 18, of Canoga Park, suffered a fractured skull, small lacerations to both legs and complaints of neck pain, the California Highway Patrol reported. Hernandez was airlifted to UCLA Medical Center and described as moderately injured.

The crash was reported at 7:23 p.m. Saturday at Woolsey Canyon Road and Valley Circle Boulevard, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Miguel Ornelas.

Hernandez was driving a 2013 Toyota eastbound on Woolsey Canyon Road, north of Valley Circle Boulevard, when it veered to the right and off the roadway into an fence and down an embankment, the CHP reported.

A backseat passenger, Carlos Luna, 17, of Winnetka, suffered minor injuries and was rushed to Northridge Hospital Medical Center.

Kristina Cuellar, 17, of Canoga Park, was also in the back seat, the CHP said she had minor injuries and was also transported to Northridge Hospital Medical Center.

Hernandez was not arrested, and the CHP report did not say if she was cited.
