Man Seen With Ax Taken Into Custody in 6-Hour SWAT Standoff in Chino Hills

A six-hour SWAT standoff came to an end in Chino Hills after authorities said the man had an ax Wednesday.

The man was taken into custody in the 14300 block of Valley Village Lane just before 7 p.m.

Around noon, a man said the suspect threatened he and his wife with an ax, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

He barricaded himself in a home for hours. The homeowners said they were not related to him, and the dispute was over an inheritance.

"The lady passed away here," Deaja Borges said. "She had a stepson and he wasn't happy with the way the trust panned out. He broke in, then threatened my parents."

Nearby homes were evacuated.

He was taken into custody without incident after SWAT used a battering ram to punch through the garage door. SWAT also pulled a truck from the garage with a large claw.

"It's unfortunate it has to come to this. Everybody is safe, thank God," Deaja said.
