Thousands of bike riders, skateboarders, runners and walkers braved the high heat Sunday to participate in a CicLAvia along a stretch of Wilshire Boulevard between downtown Los Angeles and Koreatown, according to authorities.
Police shut down Wilshire Boulevard between Grand and Western avenues for the event which ran from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. However, that part of Wilshire will remain closed to cars until 6 p.m., according to the Los Angeles police.
CicLAvia's Executive Director Romel Pascualsaid Sunday's route is one of the most iconic thoroughfares in the city.
"You can stand in the middle of Wilshire Boulevard and look down the street and literally see and feel the history of L.A.,'' Pascual said. "You can see how L.A. has evolved over time.'"
"Everyone complained about the heat, but there were no pre-hospital deaths or catastrophic events at today's CicLAvia,'' said fire department spokesman Brian Humphrey.
However, as of 5 p.m., Humphrey said he did not yet know how many people were treated for heat-related problems or if anyone was hospitalized from the event.
