Instead of a long drive to the desert in bumper-to-bumper traffic, music fans should be thrilled to hear that a train to Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival appears to be on the way.
The California State Transportation Agency awarded $5.9 million to the Riverside County Transportation Commission to construct a temporary train station platform in Indio last week, paving the way for special event trains servicing Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals, the RCTC announced in a statement.
The grant was funded via the gas tax, and the RCTC plans to contribute an additional $2.7 million for the $8.6 million project that could be completed as early as 2020.
If the project is completed on schedule, music fans would be able to board an Amtrak train at Los Angeles Union Station and travel to the Indio Transit Center, before riding a connecting shuttle to the festival grounds, the RCTC said.
