A 30-year-old man pleaded no contest Monday to fatally shooting his live-in girlfriend and wounding their 8-year-old daughter at their home in Compton and was immediately sentenced to 24 years to life in prison.
Juan Antonio Rodriguez shot 29-year-old Mayra Portillo-Moreno -- the mother of his three children -- at their residence in the 12400 block of South Grandee Avenue on April 21, 2018.
The couple was arguing late that evening when Rodriguez pulled out a gun and fired on Portillo-Moreno several times, according to testimony at an earlier preliminary hearing.
The girlfriend -- who authorities said had been in a relationship with Rodriguez for about nine years -- died at the scene.
Their daughter, who was in another room, was struck by a bullet in her head. She is disabled as a result, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
The two other children -- 1 and 3 at the time -- were not hurt during the assault, according to prosecutors.
