Compton Residents Complain of Dirty Water

Residents on a street in Compton are complaining of murky water.

Water from Toi Shaw's faucet this morning looks more like coffee.

"The tub was full with mud," Shaw said. "Essentially, it looked exactly like mud."

A few doors down Brenda McDuffie, said Thursday was the scariest.

"I've never seen nothing like that before," she said. "It's going to get darker and darker."

Compton city officials said in a statement that sediment builds up in the city's cast iron pipes, which are nearly 130 years old. The discoloration is rust and officials insist the water is safe to drink.

"I don't trust it," McDuffie said.

Esperanza Campos doesn't either.

She said she got a nearly $250 monthly water bill for a problem that happens several times a year.

"We have to take showers with dirty water plus we wash clothes with that water," she said. "We don't want that."

Shaw said it's not acceptable.

City officials said they received no complaints about the water on Thursday and that the water should be clear by now.

A spokeswoman for the City of Compton said a fire hydrant used for a nearby house fire Thursday morning may have disrupted the sediments in the pipes, causing the discoloration residents saw in their water.
