Coroner Identifies 2 of 3 Men Killed in Compton Triple Shooting

The coroner's office Thursday released the names of two of the three men found dead in an apparent gang-related shooting at a Compton park.

Two of the three shooting victims were identified as Juan Lara of Compton, 22, and Andrew Moreno, 21, according to Lt. Dave Smith of the coroner's office.

Smith said Moreno was homeless and that the third shooting victim's name will be released pending notification of next of kin.

The triple shooting was reported at 11:09 p.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of Raymond Street, said Deputy Kimberly Alexander of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

The shooting apparently was gang-related and occurred inside an outbuilding at the park following an argument between two groups, according to the sheriff's department.

"Here in Compton, we've been able to do a lot in the last couple of years to try and turn an area that had chronic violence problems around," Sheriff Jim McDonnell said. "So this is a setback."

Compton Mayor Aja Brown released a statement saying she was "deeply saddened by the news of the tragic and senseless shooting deaths of three young men" in the city.

"This is a very sad moment for the city of Compton and our hearts go out to their families. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the young men killed," Brown said.

"As Compton prepares to celebrate the spirit of being thankful as a community, the deaths of these three young men will be on all of our minds," Brown said. "Understandably, the impact and shock of this kind of violence adds to the anxiety and frustration of Compton residents. We have many community resources and partners ready to assist these families through this tough process."

Anyone with information on the crime was urged to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
