Crews will start making repairs next week along the Riverside 91 Freeway near Corona where the original "Canyon Fire" damaged infrastructure.
Workers will be replacing guardrails, fortifying shoulder space and modifying culverts on Monday and Tuesday nights on the eastbound Riverside Freeway, between the Orange County line and Green River Road, according to Caltrans.
The work is scheduled between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. and will require one lane closure, Caltrans said, adding that the Green River Road off-ramp will also be closed for several hours.
The $1.1 million freeway repair was described by Caltrans officials as "critical."
The original Canyon Fire scorched 2,600 acres in the Cleveland National Forest south of Corona and in the vicinity of Anaheim Hills.
The blaze was likely sparked by a Caltrans road crew flare that was bumped into brush by a passing motorist on the Riverside Freeway on the afternoon of Sept. 25, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.
The fire was contained a few days later, but burning embers from the fire triggered Canyon Fire 2 on the night of Oct. 8. That blaze destroyed 25 structures and charred over 9,000 acres along state Route 241 in the Anaheim area before being contained on Oct. 17.
