Dad Arrested After Baby Girl Found Alone, Uncovered in Cold Christmas Temps

A Pacoima father is facing criminal charges after leaving his 6-month-old daughter unattended outside their home in frigid Christmas morning temperatures.

Jose Chavarria, 29, was charged with two counts of child endangerment and one count of resisting arrest, according to a statement from City Attorney Mike Feuer’s office.

Neighbors found the uncovered baby girl crying in a stroller outside of Chavarria’s home around 2:10 a.m. Dec. 25. It was 49 degrees outside and the neighbors told police the girl was cold to the touch.
Chavarria was allegedly heavily intoxicated and passed out on the couch when officers found him.

Chavarria remains in custody in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to online court records. If convicted, he faces up to two years in jail and $2,000 in fines. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

The little girl was placed in the custody of Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.

It was not immediately clear if anyone else lived in the residence with the father and daughter.
