California Highway Patrol officers fatally shot a man, who was armed with a knife, after receiving a report of a person running around on a freeway early Monday in Santa Monica.
The CHP recieved a call of a man in lanes on the 10 Freeway just after 12:15 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Alex Rubios said. When officers arrived, the man was still on the freeway, but soon ran down an embankment onto Pico Boulevard and into a business area.
The man ran back onto the freeway, then returned to Pico Boulevard, where he was fatally shot by officers. A preliminary investigation determined that the man, armed with a knife, might have approached a driver.
"We just know he was running toward them with the knife at the time that the officer-involved shooting occurred," said Lt. Joe Mendoza, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
The man died at a hospital. No officers were injured.
