Dream of Living in Downey? Affordable Housing Coming Soon

Applicants will have to put in a little "sweat equity."

Hardworking families now have a shot at owning a brand-new home in Downey, Habitat for Humanity said Monday.

As part of a $100 million investment, Habitat for Humanity broke ground on six new townhomes that are to be available for low-income families.

Those who are selected have to make an investment of their own.

"This is not a lottery. Our homeowners work to help build the house. The trade-off for the affordable mortgage is between 250 and 500 hours of what we call sweat equity," Erin Rank, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity in LA, said.

Habitat will hold information sessions in English and Spanish in the coming weeks for interested families.
