Two People Shot to Death in Downey Motel

Two men were shot to death Saturday at a Downey motel, and the suspect was arrested following a warehouse barricade in Santa Fe Springs, authorities said.

Twenty-nine-year-old Raymond Joseph Penland, was located barricaded in a warehouse in the 13700 block of Bora Drive at 5:15 p.m., Dep. Charles Moore of Sheriff's Information Bureau said.

Penland was taken into custody by the SWAT team about 8:45 p.m. without further incident, Downey police Sgt. Maria Villegas said. He was booked on suspicion of homicide.

The shooting was at 11:28 a.m. at Rick's Motel, in the 9400 block of Firestone Boulevard, Villegas said.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, she said. Their names were not released pending notification of kin.

"It appears the suspect was involved in a dispute with both victims prior to the shooting and it does not appear to be a random act,'' Villegas said.

Two persons of interest were identified as Catarina Frances Barajas, 25, and Vanessa Teresa Cardenas, 32, Villegas said. Barajas came to the Downey police station and was being interviewed.

As for Cardenas, "We are in communications with her,'' the sergeant said.
