A man suspected of being behind the wheel in a deadly hit-and-run crash in Irvine was arrested Thursday afternoon, according to police.
Alec Scott Abraham, 20, was detained around 1 p.m. at a park in Costa Mesa, an Irvine Police Department spokesperson said.
It remains unclear if Abraham caused the collision, but investigators said he left the scene on foot after the crash, leaving behind the black Ford Mustang he was believed to be driving. Police believe he was alone in the car.
Katherine Hampton, 58, of Lake Forest, was killed in the crash. Her daughter and two young grandchildren, ages 7 and 2, were also traveling with her in a white Chevy Cruze and remain in serious condition at a local hospital.
A woman in her 30s who was in a Honda Civic also involved in the collision was rescued from the vehicle and taken to a trauma center. She has since been released.
Police set up a perimeter in search of the Mustang driver immediately after the crash, but he was not apprehended. There are no cameras or homes on the stretch of road where the crash occurred, and no witnesses.
Investigators said earlier Thursday that the owner of the Ford Mustang was located, but was determined to not be the driver.
Abraham is being questioned by investigators, but police said he is likely to face hit-and-run charges.
It is unclear what, if any, additional charges he may be facing.
