Drivers Stuck for Hours After Big Rigs Crash in Coachella

COACHELLA, Calif. -- A diesel fuel spill stemming from a collision of two big rigs on southbound Highway 86 jammed traffic in the Coachella area for hours Wednesday.

Nearly 30 gallons of fuel spilled when the trucks collided on Highway 86 near Airport Boulevard around 10 a.m., said California Highway Patrol public information officer Ramon Perez.

One of the big rigs swerved off the road and jackknifed, but did not overturn, he said.

The crash and spill resulted in the closure of two southbound lanes, one of which was reopened several hours later. The slow lane was expected to be cleared around 5 p.m., Perez said.
