Earth Day

Buses and Trains Throughout LA County Are Fare-Free for Earth Day

In celebration of Earth Day, buses and trains in Los Angeles County and beyond will be free of charge Monday in hopes of encouraging people to leave their cars at home.

All Metrolink trains will be fare-free on Monday, and additional staffers will be working at the commuter rail service's stations.

"Metrolink riders travel an average of 36 miles each way and choose safe, clean and reliable rail service instead of driving," Metrolink board chairman Brian Humphrey said in a statement. "Every year, people who ride Metrolink reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 120,000 metric tons."

Meanwhile, rides will also be free Monday on all Metro bus and rail lines and on the bike-share system.

The 165 bus routes and six rail lines will be free from 3 a.m. Monday until 2:59 a.m. Tuesday, according to Metro. Fare boxes on buses will be disabled and all train fare gates will be opened.

"Earth Day free rides could be a catalyst for our citizens to take action and make a bold statement about their concern for the environment," Metro CEO Phillip Washington said.

The city of Los Angeles Department of Transportation will also be offering free rides Monday on its Commuter Express, DASH, Cityride Dial-A-Ride and LAnow services. LAnow riders should use the promo code RIDELANOW when booking their trips to get the free fare.
