Fatal San Fernando Police Shooting Caught on Camera

A passerby recorded the driveway confrontation Tuesday afternoon in the 800 block of South Brand Boulevard

San Fernando police fatally shot a man in a driveway confrontation Tuesday that was caught on camera by a passerby.

Officers responded about 3:30 p.m. to a 911 call of a man with a gun inside a home in the 800 block of South Brand Boulevard in San Fernando, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department said in a news release.

When officers arrived, a woman ran out of the residence suffering from a gunshot wound to her back, investigators said. Police were then confronted by a man allegedly armed with a handgun and shot him.

The man died at the scene. His name was not released.

The woman was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening wounds.

Investigators said the man had briefly held the woman hostage inside her home. It was unclear how the two knew each other.

A semiautomatic gun and loaded magazine were recovered at the scene, investigators said.

No further details were available.

A man riding in a car captured dramatic footage showing officers firing into a driveway and people fleeing from a residence.

“I pulled over to the side after I’d seen everything, try to get in back of palm trees, any kind of tree, because of rapid fire, a lot of gunshots. I told everyone to jump out of the car," said the man, who did not want to be identified.

Two children and another woman were also inside the home at the time, investigators said. They were not hurt.

Investigators said a woman at nearby O’Melveny Elementary School claims to have a minor injury in connection with the incident, but it was unclear how.

Parallel investigations were being launched into the incident by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
