A man was under investigation Monday as a person of interest in a fatal shooting during a botched carjacking attempt in Paramount, authorities said.
The fatal shooting occurred about 1:40 p.m. Sunday in the 8600 block of Somerset Boulevard, sheriff's Sgt. Aura Sierra said. The victim died at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of family.
Detectives learned the suspected gunman had been driving a red Lexus and may have been involved in a road rage incident near the intersection of Artesia Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach prior to the homicide, Sierra said. The suspect allegedly fired several rounds into the air during that incident, but the victim in the road rage incident was not hit, Sierra said.
The suspected gunman then allegedly drove to an apartment building in the 8600 block of Somerset Boulevard, where he attempted to carjack the victim who was shot and killed, Sierra said.
The suspect allegedly fled that site and carjacked a red Ford Mustang at gunpoint near the intersection of Garfield Avenue and Alondra Boulevard. The victim of that carjacking was not hurt, Sierra said.
After the carjacking, the suspect fled the scene and then crashed into a Cadillac near the intersection of Greenleaf Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard in Compton, and the Cadillac driver suffered minor injuries, Sierra said.
When deputies arrived, they learned the suspect was picked up by someone in a black Kia, Sierra said. Deputies searched the area and found the Kia parked in front of a home in the 1300 block of Sloan Avenue in Compton.

Several people were taken into custody at that location but were released after detectives determined they apparently were not involved in the crime, the sheriff's department reported.
A man was detained for questioning at another location, however, and he was considered a person of interest in the killing, pending further investigation, the sheriff's department reported.
