A woman who was shot in a Jeep Thursday morning appears to have been caught in the crossfire when at least two people opened fire in an area southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
The victim, identified only as a woman in her 30s, was struck by a stray bullet as she was traveling in the Jeep Renegade SUV with her fiance and niece. The woman suffered at least one gunshot wound to the head and died at a hospital.
"We believe she was the unintended victim of a stray bullet," said Lt. Scott Hoglund, of the sheriff's homicide bureau.
He called the shooting death a "senseless tragedy."
The SUV driver was identified as the victim's fiance. He and the child, the victim's 6-year-old niece, were not injured.
The victims do not live in the area, Hoglund said.
Homicide detectives responded to the scene at about 10 p.m. near Union Pacific Avenue and South Bonnie Beach Place.
