Father Holds Baby Hostage in Police Standoff

A father had an hourlong standoff with police Friday night while holding his 1-year-old son hostage in Van Nuys.

The standoff began around 8 p.m. in the area of Sepulveda Boulevard and Cohasset Street, according to Officer Sal Ramirez of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Division.

The father took the son from the mother, who in turn called police, but it wasn't immediately clear why the man was a threat to the boy.

The man refused to give the child up to police but eventually surrendered about 9 p.m., Ramirez said. The boy was unharmed and the man was taken into custody.
