Father Killed at Long Beach Park During Family Reunion

A man shot to death in the restroom of a Long Beach park was identified Monday by the coroner's office.

He was Fredrick Taft, 57, of Long Beach, coroner's Lt. Larry Dietz said.

The shooting was reported at 4:26 p.m. Saturday at Pan American Park in the 5100 block of East Centralia Street in the Lakewood Village area, Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Karen Owens said.

The man now identified as Taft was pronounced dead at the scene, Owens said. He was shot in the upper torso while in the restroom by another man who then fled the park on foot, she said.

The motive for the shooting was not known, Owens said.

Witnesses at the scene told reporters the man was attending an annual reunion of family members and neighbors.

Anyone with information was asked to call LBPD homicide detectives Michael Hubbard and Adrian Garcia at (562) 570-7244 or LA Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
