Firefighters Battle Blaze at Abandoned Building in Downey

A fire broke out Wednesday in a vacant building on the property of the Rancho Los Amigos Rehabilitation Center in Downey and forced crews to battle it from the outside as it went to a second alarm.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, which was reported about 3:10 p.m. at the one-story building near the intersection of Dahlia Avenue and Consuelo Street on the south side of the rehabilitation center property, a Downey Fire Department dispatcher said.

Firefighters were forced into a defensive mode and they poured water on the flames from outside the structure, according to the dispatcher.

Crews from the Downey, Vernon, Compton, Santa Fe Springs and Los Angeles County fire departments responded.

As of about 9:40 p.m., knockdown had not been called.
