Firefighters Increase Containment Around Irwindale Fire

A brush fire that broke out Thursday afternoon in Irwindale scorched nearly 30 acres and threatened structures in a storage area at a nearby brewery.

The fire was reported about 5:40 p.m. in the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. A second alarm was called at 6:20 p.m. as the flames moved toward a storage area at the MillerCoors brewery, a dispatch supervisor said.

Five helicopters made water drops to assist firefighters on the ground and by 8 p.m. firefighters had a good handle on the blaze, which burned 29 acres and was 50 percent contained, and air units were released, the dispatcher said. The fire forced the closure of Metro Gold Line tracks through the area.

The fire was 65-percent contained Friday morning.
