Firefighters fought five small brush fires along the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway in Newhall early Saturday morning in an incident that officials say is "suspicious in nature."
The fires were reported in a half-mile stretch between the 14 Freeway and Calgrove Boulevard just after midnight. The right two lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway were shut down for about two hours.
The fires were extinguished relatively quickly and approximately 1.25 acres were burned altogether.
The cause is unclear, but investigators believe that it is suspicious.
Authorities said they did not know whether this incident was connected with another fire along the 5 Freeway earlier this week.

"We did two nights ago have a fire up in the Angeles Forest, which is probably 10, 15 miles north of here. That fire too was deemed suspicious," Los Angeles County Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Salhus said.
