Baby Drowns in Fontana Inflatable Pool

A 1-year-old baby drowned in an inflatable pool while playing at a Fontana home on Wednesday, police said.

The baby was playing in the front yard with his 3-year-old brother about 6 p.m. when he somehow ended up inside the small pool that was filled with about 1 1/2 feet of water, the Fontana Police Department said.

The family was home but did not check up on the children for three to five minutes, police said.

The baby was spotted floating in the water by the family.

"The message is that it could happen anytime and any place in just a short amount of time," police Det. Matthew Roth said.

Neighbors recalled seeing police and firefighters outside of the North Maple Avenue home after the drowning.

"We saw that they were carrying a little kid and they had him on oxygen and they rushed him to the hospital," neighbor Roxana Lazaro said.

Investigators said it's too early to say whether any charges could be filed.
