Former Coach Gets Prison in Student Sex Case

A former assistant baseball coach at John Burroughs High School in Burbank was handed a two-year prison term Thursday for having unlawful sex with a female student over a period of nearly three years.

Jose Antonio Banuelos Jr., 28, was sentenced immediately after pleading no contest to one felony count of unlawful sexual intercourse.

Prosecutors said Banuelos began the relationship with the teen in June 2013, when she was 15. When her family contacted Burbank police this March, she told detectives she'd been in a consensual relationship with the coach that had ended a month earlier.

Banuelos, who was also a part-time employee in the city's Parks and Recreation Department, was in possession of a loaded handgun when he was arrested in the parking lot of a Ralphs supermarket on March 18, according to authorities.

Banuelos was hired as a baseball coach in February 2012 and no longer works for the district, according to Burbank Unified School District Superintendent Matt Hill.
