Formula DRIFT Competition Speeds Through Long Beach This Weekend

One week before the Grand Prix, the best drifters in the country deal with rainy conditions

Before the Grand Prix kicks off its season by heading to Long Beach next weekend, a more freestyle of driving is set to speed through the city this weekend.

Formula DRIFT, the perennial North American professional drifting championship, will have its 13th competition in downtown Long Beach all day Friday and Saturday.

This type of racing involves modified cars aiming to drive into the racetrack's walls before turning and skidding alongside it cleanly.

As drivers are forced to glide and drift through part of the 2-mile course, their driving abilities and vehicle controls are being put to the test even more than usual due to the rainy forecast on hand.

The Formula DRIFT series was brought to the United States by the same company that brought the D1 Grand Prix stateside. The Grand Prix of Long Beach will take place next weekend at the same venue.
